Underestimated responses of Walker circulation to ENSO-related SST anomaly in atmospheric and coupled models

چکیده
Abstract The Pacific Walker circulation (WC) is a major component of the global climate system. It connects sea surface temperature (SST) variability to variabilities from other ocean basins mid- and high latitudes. Previous studies indicated that ENSO-related atmospheric feedback, in particular, wind response largely underestimated AMIP CMIP models. In this study, we further investigate responses WC stream function level pressure (SLP) SST by comparing 45 63 models six reanalysis datasets. We reveal diversity performances simulated SLP between different While El Niño-related are well most coupled models, these AMIP5/6 capture ~ 75% those reanalysis, whereas CMIP5/6 58% responses. Further analysis indicates could be partially attributed biases precipitation scheme both as patterns One should pay special attention when studying or tropical atmosphere–ocean interactions using numerical

ENSO-Related Precipitation and Its Statistical Relationship with the Walker Circulation Trend in CMIP5 AMIP Models
Observational evidence shows that the Walker circulation (WC) in the tropical Pacific has strengthened in recent decades. In this study, we examine the WC trend for 1979–2005 and its relationship with the precipitation associated with the El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) using the sea surface temperature (SST)-constrained Atmospheric Model Intercomparison Project (AMIP) simulations of the Co...
متن کاملMechanisms for Lagged Atmospheric Response to ENSO SST Forcing*
The mechanism and sensitivity of the lagged response of tropical tropospheric temperature to El Niño– Southern Oscillation (ENSO) SST forcing are examined using the Quasi-Equilibrium Tropical Circulation Model (QTCM) coupled to a slab mixed layer ocean model, along with a simple analytical model. It is found that the lag and amplitude of tropospheric temperature response depend on mixed layer d...
متن کاملENSO Bred Vectors in Coupled Ocean–Atmosphere General Circulation Models
The breeding method has been implemented in the NASA Seasonal-to-Interannual Prediction Project (NSIPP) coupled general circulation model (CGCM) with the ultimate goal of improving operational seasonal to interannual climate predictions through ensemble forecasting and data assimilation. This is the first attempt to isolate the evolving ENSO instability and its corresponding global atmospheric ...
متن کاملHow do the strength and type of ENSO affect SST predictability in coupled models
The effects of amplitude and type of the El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) on sea surface temperature (SST) predictability on a global scale were investigated, by examining historical climate forecasts for the period 1982-2006 from air-sea coupled seasonal prediction systems. Unlike in previous studies, SST predictability was evaluated in different phases of ENSO and for episodes with various...
متن کاملOceanic Regulation of the Atmospheric Walker Circulation
A coupled theory is proposed to account for the magnitude of the Walker circulation in the tropical Pacific. It is suggested that the Pacific Walker circulation is at a saturation state, at which the zonal sea surface temperature difference is bounded by about a quarter of the latitudinal difference of the radiative–convective equilibrium sea surface temperature.
